St Eval Spitfires 1-2 Grampound

28th September 2019

Duchy League Cup Group D

Grampound's first half display was everything that manager James Webb wanted, full of neat passing, aggression and pace but most importantly, a couple of good goals.  Grampound should have actually scored more and could have been out of sight by the break.  The goals that did come, though, were a good header from Jules Woodman at a corner and a cracking effort from Sam Blount, receiving the ball on the edge of the penalty area, dropping his shoulder and beating his marker before slamming a low shot past the home keeper into the far corner of the net.  More goals could have followed including an excellent break by Grampound when Blount headed out at a defensive corner, Dylan Fox collected the ball and ran at pace at the stretched home defence before releasing a ball into space for Martin Baker, whose shot grazed the far post with the goalkeeper beaten.  As the rain came in, other chances were created as Grampound enjoyed the slick surface and should really have been scored although the home keeper made a couple of outstanding saves from Blount and Shane Weeks. The second half also started well but Grampound became a little more scrappy in their play. With 12 minutes of the half played, the home goalkeeper kicked from his hands and with the strong wind driving it the bounce deceived Ryan Henderson and he was unable to keep the ball out of Grampound's net.  This freak goal gave the hosts some heart and they, at last, began to put some pressure on Grampound's defence.  With over half an hour to resist, Grampound had to dig in and managed to withstand the onslaught and might have even extended their lead on a couple of occasions, the home goalkeeper again making a couple of good saves.
