Grampound 5-2 St Eval Spitfires

30th November 2019

Duchy League Cup Group D

Grampound booked their place in the last 16 knockout stages of the league cup with a decisive win against St Eval from the division above Grampound's.  It didn't look too good for Grampound when the visitors started so much better than them, taking the lead with a goal from Masters with an outstanding shot from 30 yards followed soon after by a close in strike by Summerfield to put them 2-0 up after 8 minutes.  Grampound gradually found their feet after that difficult start and the visitors' goal took on a charmed life with shots being directed straight at their keeper or being deflected to safety, the post being hit twice. Grampound eventually got back in the game when a foul on Bruce Campbell earned a penalty and Dean Dunn stepped up to slot the spot kick home.  Grampound were now very much on top and it was only a matter of time before a home equaliser materialised, Dylan Fox forcing a good save from the keeper before following up and being determined to reach the parried loose ball first, scoring from close range.

At the break, Grampound knew they could take the victory and it did not take long after the restart for new signing Aidan Richards to hit the back of the net when the ball dropped to him following a corner to put Grampound ahead for the first time at 3-2.  With St Eval not providing the threat they posed at the beginning of the game, Grampound having sorted out the problems they had earlier experienced, the home side started to play with ball around with confidence and the fourth goal came when excellent team passing and movement saw Danny Austin, returned to Grampound colours after a few seasons away, square the ball for Sam Blount to score comfortably from 15 yards.  More goals looked likely with almost every attack but it was not until 2 minutes from time that Aidan Richards found Shane Weeks in the penalty area and he rolled the ball into the corner for Grampound's fifth.
