Grampound Veterans 5-2 Bude Town

15th October 2023
Cornwall Veterans League Cup Round 1

An outstanding win brought about by an outstanding performance.
Bude were a reasonable team and created a number of chances in the first half.  Grampound also looked dangerous with the movement up from#nt of Matt Clements who has returned to the club after a spell away.  Clements gave Grampound the lead midway through the first half with a clever chip over  the goalkeeper.
The second half saw the visitors starting with a bit more energy and it didn't take them very long to create an opportunity that resulted in an equaliser.  After that goal, Grampound got back into their stride and Chris Warburton scored with a rising shot into the top corner from 25 yards, giving Grampound the lead again.  Jules Woodman extended the lead to 3-1 with about 20 minutes remaining and it looked like it would be a cruise to the final whistle.  Bude had other ideas and a neat header reduced their deficit.  Just 2-3 down, Bude threw players forward and Grampound had to defend strongly to keep the lead.  Tackles and brave blocks were required and made, allowing Ross Jackson-Hicks to carry the ball on the break towards the  Bude goal.  He outpaced the struggling defenders and smashed the ball in off the underside of the bar to make the score 4-2 with only minutes to go.  Jackson-Hicks repeated the trick in the final minute when his pace again took him deep into Bude's half close to the goal line where he hammered the ball goalwards and into the net for goal number 5, helped by a deflection off the goalkeeper.
