Saltash Borough 7-2 Grampound Veterans

12th November 2023
Cornwall Veterans League Knockout Cup

Grampound's performances on 3G pitches in the past has usually been disappointing but in this game, in spite of the eventual heavy defeat, the team performed outstandingly until fitness told in the last part of the game.  Grampound's passing was neat and tidy with the ball being looked after and this gave Grampound the opportunity to move up the pitch in a threatening manner.  Grampound should have taken the lead when the home goalkeeper could not hold a shot and the ball, according to all those with a decent view, was well over the goal line. The referee was not well-placed and did not award the goal.  Borough took the lead soon after but Grampound equalised after a good team move followed by an excellent finish from Alex Makepeace.  A couple more goals from the home side, one of them a lettle soft, however, put the home team in charge before the break.
Borough were more assertive in the second half but Grampound continued to play well until the last 20 minutes or so when the fitness of the hosts seemed to be superior to Grampound's.  Even so, the 4 second half goals against were all pretty soft and Makepeace scored another good goal with a smart finish after errors from the home side.
Overall, an excellent performance from Grampound
