Southgate Seniors 5-3 Grampound Veterans

3 March 2024
Cornwall Veterans League Cup Quarter Final

This twice postponed match had to be switched to Southgate's 3G pitch  in Launceston.  It was to be expected that the home side would be more familiar with the surface but, for once, Grampound started the game really well and gave the hosts a shock when on 7 minutes, Colin Webb slipped a neat through ball to Alex Makepeace who drove a low shot into the far corner of Southgate's goal for the opener.  Grampound continued to look the more dangerous side throughout the first half, creating a good few chances,  but in the last few minutes of the 45 it went all wrong as 2 goals were conceded and Southgate went into half-time 2-1 ahead.
The shock of those late first half goals seemed to hang over Grampound as home side suddenly found keeping possession to be a bit easier and it was not really surprising to see them scoring a third on the hour.  Grampound heads did not drop and an extra spark followed Makepeace heading home a corner to reduce the arrears.  He completed his hat trick when he finished neatly after being  gifted the ball by the home goalkeeper  as he tried to pass out.  Disappointingly, with 20 minutes left Grampound conceded again more when defenders stood still at a set piece and then at a corner as they chased the game and an injury to Makepeace made getting back into the match that bit harder.
The Grampound squad, however, should be pleased with this cup run which has seen them play some outstanding football.
