St Day 4-1 Grampound Veterans

21st January 2024
Cornwall Veterans League

A close match in very difficult gale conditions resulted in a flattering win for the home side.  St Day deserved the points but the result could easily have gone the other way.  Playing against the wind in the first half, Grampound found it difficult to get out of their half but still managed to create  a couple of excellent chances which were simply not finished well enough.  St Day, however, also had 2 chances and scored them both.
The second half was very different.  Grampound battled back into the game and although a change of shape made them  more vulnerable, for half an hour they pegged the hosts back, pressing relentlessly but without putting the ball in the net although some presentable chances were made.  St Day had to defend well to maintain their lead but when Dayle Gilbert latched on to a poor clearance and hit the net from 25 yards it looked as if Grampound, now well on top, might pick up a point but the ball would not quite run for them.  Two more  well-taken St Day goals in a minute near the end saw Grampound go down to a heavy defeat that was not deserved and the team should not be disapponted to lose to a team just marginally more efficient on the day.
