Grampound Veterans 2-1 St Agnes

21 April 2024
Cornwall Veterans League

Grampound started the match well and it was clear that the two teams were fairly evenly matched.  St Agnes were tidy with the ball throughout but lacked punch up front whereas Grampound also played good football but always looked the more dangerous.  A catalogue of missed chances looked like it might mean Grampound would not achieve as much as they might and in the end a 2-1 win was richly deserved.
Alex Makepeace added to his impressive goalscoring run this season as, midway through the first half, he was too strong for a visiting defender, brushed him aside and finished neatly.  St Abgnes equalised just before the break after a bit of a mix-up in the Grampound defence led to a disappointing goal.
The second half belonged to Grampound with the winning effort being a real picture goal.  Makepeace pinched the ball from a St Agnes defender and advanced down the right wing. He drove in a firm cross which was met by the head of Ross Jackson-Hicks and his bullet header was a fitting winning score.  Grampound managed to not take advantage of further excellent chances to make the game safe and St Agnes almost grabbed an equaliser from a breakaway in the final minutes but the 2-1 final result was well deserved
