Grampound 2-1 Lostwithiel

9 March 2024

St Piran League

The pitch was confirmed as fit just befor kick-off but the incessant rain before the start and throughout the match promised to make it a difficult game for both teams.  The visitors looked the more composed as the game started but Grampound showed a spririt that was going to give them chances.  Mark Roch in the Grampound goal was called upon to make a number of good saves in the first half but Grampound's attacks also looked promising and a break by Joe Bray should have ended in a shot on target but did not work out like that. Defensive problems in the Grampound team were resolved and as the half wore on the hosts looked more confident and eventually a smart break gave Hayden Bates a chance to score his first goal for Grampound and he made no mistake from 15 yards with a splendid low shot into the corner of the net.  A lead was something that has rar ely come Grampound's way this season and the team sensed that this might be a positive ending for the club and battled harder  to achieve it.
Grampound welcomed the break and took the opportunity to reconfirm their commitment.  The team looked as if they might hold out for a win but things went wrong when Mark Roch made another good save but the ball spun towards the goal and hit the post, allowing a Lostwithiel player to scramble the ball into the net for the equaliser.  Grampound might have crumbled but didn't and fought back. With 20 minutes left a really good move stretched the visiting defence and saw the hosts work a  good chance to allow Ben Rowe to score his first goal for the club.  The last 20 minutes saw Grampound digging in to protect their lead and the teameven made a couple of opportunities that may have been more productive but the final pass let them down.  Lostwithiel, however, had to defend strongly to avoid going further behind.
Some solid defending saw Grampound through to a great win in difficult conditions and the team celebtrated after the game.
