Grampound Vets 4-4 Kernow Wanderers

14th May 2023

Cornwall Veterans League

Grampound started slowly and went 2-0 down within 15 minutes due to  some sloppy defending and the first half performance was pretty diappointing until just before the break when Ben Taylor slotted home after the visiting goalkeeper could only parry Woodman's free-kick into his path.  Minutes before, Grampound were disappointed to not be awarded a penalty when Taylor was fouled but the referee judged the foul to have occerred inches outside the penalty area, much to the surprise of many Grampound players.  At just one goal behind at half time, however, gave Grampound a liitle hope and in the second half the team were much, much better.  Better pressing and more aggression gave Grampound renewed energy and the team became much  less easy to keep out.  Firstly, Ross Jackson-Hicks scored with a crisp finish to put the scores level and minutes late Alex Makepeace put Grampound ahead for the first time with a header.  A little slack tackling allowed a now struggling visiting team  back in the game but Grampound went 4-3 up when Jules Woodman headed a long free kick into the top corner.  The slender lead might have become more when Jacksol-Hicks was fouled but the referee adjudged it, again, to be outside the penalty area, those close being surprised by this decision.  Grampound were again disappointed when Jackson-Hicks was unable to convert a good chance and were denied yet another penalty when he was seemingly fouled while trying to conert a nother chance.  This was not to be, however, and the inevitable happened when a visitng player's shot, the last of the game and of the season , found the back of the net to equalise 4-4.  Grampound were disappointed to not being able to hang on to the win but were pleased with the way the team battled during the second half and created the opportunities to win, even if denied at the very last.
