Week St Mary 1-2 Grampound

15th October 2022

Duchy League

Grampound started this important game slowly, having to work hard to keep an excellent Week side at bay but gradually worked their way into the game and took the lead in the 17th minute.  Jules Woodman was found with a pass and he made no mistake from close in. The goal came as Grampound had begun to take control and after it the team really settled down and began to dominate the match, even if Week had plenty of possession.  Grampound's lead was extended on 29 minutes when a sweeping move from one end of the pitch to the other ended with Danny Austin neatly slipping the ball past the home goalkeeper.  The home team looked a little surprised and deflated as Grampound continued to call the tune until the break.

Grampound expected the hosts to come out fighting after half time and were not disappointed.  Grampound were a little slow to react to a short corner and 3 shots were blocked before a tremendous drive from the edge of the penalty box hit the net, pulling a goal back for Week with only a minute of the second half played.  The home side dominated possession in the second half but Grampound's defending was first-class as attacks were continually repelled.  The well organised defence did not offer too many chances and the best chance for an equaliser came when the ball broke to a Week forward close in and for once, Grampound were shorthanded.  It looked impossible to miss but diving keeper Dan Riley was able to block the effort with his hands and the ball was scrambled away.  The subs came on and continued to fight to keep Grampound's lead.  The last 10 minutes or so did not seem as difficult as what went on before with sub  Kew Rowden doing an excellent job with his interceptions and tackling and instilling calm in a team with tired legs.

In total, this was an excellent Grampound performance, full of energy, good passing and endeavour and  against a very good team. The good football had to be coupled with a good amount of  defensive organisation and battling spirit.  Grampound were pleased to hear the final whistle and at the end there was some elation at what had been achieved and that Grampound were now sitting at the top of a league for the first time in a few years.
