Lostwithiel 2-3 Grampound

5th November 2022

Duchy League

This looked to be going in the direction of a comfortable Grampound win but a typical Duchy League fightback made Grampound battle for the 3 points.  Grampound got off to a fine start when Sam Blount latched on to the ball in midfield and hit the perfect rising shot into the far top corner from over 25 yards.  The goal settled Grampound and the ball was passed around sweetly, creating regular opportunities.  This was typified by the second goal when a series of passes kept possession until Joe Dunn hit a 40 yard pass over the defence which was met on the volley by Kev Rowden.  His effort went past the keeper to make it the second special goal of the half.  Grampound's football continued to be fluent but no furher goals came before the break.

The second half saw Lostwithiel change their shape a little and throw men forwards.  Grampound did not seem able to get going and a few chances started to appear in the Grampound penalty area.  Eventually, one went in and that gave the home side a further boost.  Grampound had to defend well and Dan Riley had to be brave in keeping efforts out.  With the referee giving some very bizarre decisions in the second half which even exceeded in strangeness the yellow card shown to Dylan Fox in the first half, Grampound became shocked by the weird timekeeping and the awful sinbin decisions given (one for asking how long was left of the game, the other, apparently, for nothing at all).  For what seemed a long time, Grampound had to play with 9 men, the referee seeming to find extraordinary amounts of time to add on - Fox was in the sinbinh for 19 minuteswithout there being any substitutions, injuries or timewasting.   Grampoun, eventually back to 11 men, thought that the game was safe when Karl Orchard got on the end of a superb cross from Danny Austin and tapped in at the far post to make the score 1-3.  However, Lostwithiel went to the other end straightaway and scored again, Dan Riley being a little unlucky with how the ball found a home player from his parry.  The now full complement of Grampound players managed to calm the situation in the remaining minutes and retain their hold on the three points.  Many thanks to the Lostwithiel players who made a point of coming over and expressing their apologies at the final whistle.
