Lanreath 3-0 Grampound

21st January 2023

Duchy League

Following their Junior Cup exit on the previous Saturday, Grampound looked a little jaded in this difficult game at promotion rivals Lanreath.  The home side were certainly up for the game and Grampound spent most of the half defending.  Grampound made a couple of chances that came to nothing but struggled to keep the ball on a difficult rough surface.  Lanreath dominated possession but created no real chances until the dying minutes of the half when a home player went through 3 ineffective tackles in Grampound's penalty area, the ball finally falling to a home striker who finished comfortably to put the home side ahead.
A couple of uncharacteristic defensive errors gave the home side two more easy chances and they mad no mistake to go 3-0 ahead 7 minutes into the second half.  A flurry of yellow cards appeared as the game became a little more heated, especially when Connor Bussell won two tackles and crashed  through the Lanreath defence and put the ball in the net.  The home linesman eventually indicated that an offside offence had happened, with him and the referee giving a few different versions of the reasons for the offence.  Only the linesman of the good crowd in the ground thought he was correct but the referee went with him and  Grampound were denied what looked to be a perfectly good goal.  Grampound improved in the latter stages of the match, with a red card being shown to a Lanreath player for, presumably, violent conduct, but that was too late for Grampound and Lanreath were deserved winners on the day.
