Troon 2-0 Grampound

14th January 2023

Cornwall Junior Cup Round 4

Grampound did not do themselves justice in the first half, giving one of the favourites for this cup too much time and space and consequently they controlled much of the play.  Troon also managed to score 2 goals, the first after Grampound defenders simply missed a straight through ball and the second from  of a well hit free kick just outside the Grampound penalty.  Players on both sides seem puzzled by the dubious award of the kick but this was just one of a number of similarly odd decisions by the referee that certainly seemed to favour the home team.
Following some strong words at the break, Grampound came out a better team for the second half, retaining and passing the ball better and closing down and challenging more effectively.  A few good chances were created but the ball woud not go in and the team suffered its first defeat of the season.  It was disappointing to bow out of the cup but the squad should be pleased with  the way it battled back under difficult cirumstances when two goals down against a quality team,  Grampound being unlucky to draw the teams at the top of both the Duchy Premier and the Trelawny Premier leagues in its cup campaign.
