Grampound 3-2 St Eval Spitfires

25th February 2023

Duchy League

Grampound got back in the winning way after a hard fought game against opponents much improved from their game against us in December. Grampound started brilliantly, dominating the game and opening up the visitors on a couple of occasions before Danny Austin's low right footed shot beat the diving keeper's right hand to put Grampound ahead on 7 minuutes.  At the time, it looked as if Grampound might take them to the cleaners but St Eval battled back into the game and equalised 12 minutes later.   Worse was to come for Grampound when they conceded possession in their own half and two passes later a St Eval striker had time to pick his spot and put the visitors ahead.  For the next period, St Eval had much the better of the game but without making too many real chances as Grampound could not seem do do the simple things well. Dan Riley kept Grampound in the game with an incredible double save when it looked almost impossible for the striker to miss.  As the game progressed, the tally of fouls by the visitors mounted dramatically and this seemed to spur Grampound on. On 75 minutes, Dylan Fox challenged the visiting goalkeeper for a high ball and the ball fell to him to tuck the ball away for an equaliser.  Grampound now realised that they could take the game with the right approach, helped by the added pace of subs Jobey Prior and Dom Spiers, and pressed St Eval back.  The winning goal came with 10 minutes left when a cross from the right ended up bouncing across the visitors's six yard box and  Prior was first to the ball and he nodded it home for the winner and his first goal for Grampound.
Grampound were second best for a substantial portion of the game and the fact that Grampound eventually took all three points showed that deep down the team has real resilience.
