Grampound 2-3 Gunnislake Res.

6th November 2021

Duchy League Division 2

Grampound started poorly, which was not unexpected considering that the starting line-up contained 2 new players and the bench included another.  The team went behind when some sloppy defending gave Gunni an acceptable chance and the striker was composed as he found the corner of the net.  Grampound were working their way back into the game but another setback occurred just 12 minutes later when some ball watching in the home defence gave Gunni another chance and they duly went 2 goals up.  Grampound rallied again, realising the opponents who hit eight past them just a few weeks before  were not as solid as they thought and a determined run into the penalty area by Jake Schofield saw him carved down,  Ollie Young, playing his first game for Grampound, confidently smashed the resulting penalty kick into the corner to bring his team back into the game.  This was to be shortlived, however, when minutes later the referee awarded  Gunni a penalty when Grampound keeper Dan Riley pushed the ball away before an onrushing forward made contact with him.  This was clearly a very poor decision and the ref's position possibly contributed, but it was very disappointing nonetheless.
After an even opening half in terms of chances and possession, the  second half belonged to Grampound.  The team battled back and the visiting keeper was extended on a few occasions.  Grampound kept going and were rewarded when at a corner, the ball fell to Jake Schofield who was able to force the ball over the goal line to register his first Grampound goal.  With continued strong performances from the subs who came on, Grampound might well have scored again but the equaliser just would not come, a disappointing result after an excellent performace against a strong team.
