St Mawgan Res. 3-2 Grampound

4th December 2021

Duchy League Division 2

This was another match played in a freezing gale that blew down the pitch even stronger than in the previous week's game.  Grampound started the match attacking into the wind and managed to take the lead after 8 minutes. A loose ball was heading toward the corner flag with the home goalkeeper in pirsuit.  Dylan Fox chased too but was a couple of metres behind at the start. Fox's excellent pace eventually overtook the keeper and as he reached the ball a desperate lunge brought him down for a clear penalty.  Ollie Young despatched a perfect spot kick into the top corner for his third penalty goal in four appearances.  The rest of the half was awful, Grampound being not able to keep possession and the home side having more possession but doing little with it.  Grampond had to defend for almost all the half but reached the break a goal to the good.
St Mawgan looked a different side in the second half.  Their passing was neat and tidy and they kept possession well.  Grampound continued to show a solid defence but it was not a surprise when a cross from the right was hit well to bring the teams level.  Soon after, St Mawgan went into the lead but this was not without contoversy as the referee missed a clear foul by the goal provider on Skews.  With Grampound throwing caution to the wind, St Mawgan broke out and scored a third which seemed to put the game beyond question.  A long free kick into the home penalty area created a little confusion and the ball ran to Matt Skews who smashed the ball home from close range.  Grampound continued to press but time ran out with the home team thankful.
