Boscastle 2-3 Grampound

Saturday 16th February 2002
Duchy League Division 3

Despite their recent improvement, Grampound were still wary of Boscastle having been put to the sword 6-1 in the reverse fixture. However, on a beautiful day, it was Grampound who started the brighter. In fact, the distant echoes from the first whistle had barely faded when young Max Varnell played in his father Ian for the opening goal.  The game continued to follow the same pattern through the first half and eventually the ball broke to Dai Moseley in the Boscastle area and he put Grampound 2-0 ahead

Grampound's defence has been looking pretty solid of late, with the experienced partnership of Ford and Sims, defiant at its heart. The back four constantly soaked up the Boscastle pressure and Grampound looked very dangerous on the break. In the end, the pressure paid off, when a foul by Harris resulted in a penalty for Boscastle which was readily despatched.

Grampound started the second half with their blindfolds on, with Boscastle pegging them in their own half. It was only a matter of time before Boscastle equalised, and indeed, they did when one of many corners was headed home. The final third of the game was very exciting, with both teams wasting good chances. The best chance falling to the Grampound striker Andrew Webb, who somehow rattled the bar when it appeared easier to score.

In need of a victory and with little more than ten minutes left, Grampound changed things around and threw big Stuart Harris up front. Having squandered many a lead this season Grampound were determined for it not to happen again and the tactical switch paid off with just a minute left. The ball arrived at Harris's feet a few yards out, and after what seemed like an age of trying to set himself up, Harris slotted home for victory. A win that will surely see Grampound to safety.
