Tintagel 1-4 Grampound

Saturday 2nd February 2002
Duchy League Division 3

Despite the inclement weather, Grampound travelled out to Tintagel knowing the game could still get called off. Happily, the game went ahead although the wet and muddy conditions made for an often untidy game.

Tintagel started brightly with the slope and the wind at their backs. Having played some neat football Tintagel got the early breakthrough with a very messy, "stuck in the mud" kind of goal. Tintagel continued to press but the Grampound defence was strong and Anderson in goal was magnificent throughout. Grampound have been playing much better recently and got the equaliser before half time. A Tony Ford free kick was only parried by the keeper leaving Andrew Webb to head home.

Grampound may have had the wind and slope in their favour in the second half, but again it was Tintagel who played the neat football and created the early chances. However Anderson in goal continued to frustrate and great interplay between Moseley and Harris gifted Webb his second header of the game. Despite being ahead, Grampound looked the more nervous having squandered several leads during the season. It was down to a great individual goal from fullback Andy Cundy to remove their tension, when he broke through the middle and slotted a 20 yard effort into the bottom corner.

As Tintagel endeavoured to make up the deficit, Grampound looked ever dangerous on the break and a great through ball by Webb sent Dai Moseley clear down the right. Although Harris was calling for the far post cross, Moseley, not known for his tap-ins, let-loose from all of 30 yards and saw his effort fly over the keeper for number four. On another day it could have easily been a six-all thriller, but as it turned out the result lifted Grampound above their opponents and a little closer to avoiding the drop.
