Kernow Wanderers 0-2 Grampound Veterans

28th November 2021

Cornwall Veterans Knockout Cup Round 1

Grampound progressed to the next round of the Knockout Cup after a victory that was much more emphatic than the score suggests.  Grampound, for once, started well and passed the ball neatly and denying possession to the home side.  Wanderers posed little threat with the Grampound back 4 dealing well with any threats.  The whole side looked composed and totally in charge, the only time the composure seemed to slip was in the final third although it only seemed a matter of time before the ball hit the net.  It came just after the half hour whe a firmly hit low cross from the right was met by Alex Makepeace and his effort flashed into the corner of the net.  Makepeace nearly grabbed his second soon after as he raced onto a ball through the heart of the home defence but his shot rattled the crossbar instead of finding the back of the net.  Other chances were missed too but Grampound were pleased to turn round a goal up at the break for once.

The play was a little more untidy in the second half but available space became greater as players tired.  Grampound did not really take advantage of their superiority in terms of goals but a lot of confidence was gained due to such a convincing performance.  The result was sealed when man-of-the-match Steve Moorcroft rose higher at a corner to head his first goal for a while.  The two teams meet again in two weeks in a league fixture and Grampound will hope to reproduce the form shown in this game.
