Carharrack 1-2 Grampound

24th July 2021

Friendly

In the first friendly of pre-season the Grampound team suffered from numerous player withdrawals and it was a bit of a scratch team that turned up at our old friends Carharrack from the Trelawney League,  strong opponents with an impressive record from last season.  With one player held up by holiday traffic, Grampound started with just 10 men but were faily comfortable defensively in the first half.  Carharrack did take the lead, however on about 25 minutes with a sweet shot into the corner.  Dan Riley in goal continued to be  busier than the home keeper and made a few decent saves to keep Grampound in contention.  The home side loooked the better team, however, and showed a little more fitness and Grampound ended the half a little frustrated with their performance.

HT 1-0

The second half saw Grampound trying to play simpler football with a bit more drive.  An injury to player manager James Webb reduced the team to 10 but Carharrack's edge seemed to have gone somewhat and Grampound's improved intensity saw the equaliser come after new signing Nathan Penfold hit a great shot against the bar with Dylan Fox smashing the rebound home on the volley from 15 yards.  Grampound now had a period on top, pushing the hosts back and going close on a couple of occasions.  Carharrack seemed to have ridden the storm, especially when Grampound were reduced further in number due to a hand injury to goalkeeper Riley, but bounced back when a free kick from 35 yards was driven, arrow-like, by Penfold into the top corner of the net.  Grampound had to defend in the remaining 15 minutes but held out comfortably to complete a very pleasing victory against strong opponents.
