Halsetown 6-3  Veterans

4th October 2020

Cornwall Veterans League

Playing against a howling gale in the first half, Grampound could not seem to put too much together but were very pleased to take the lead when new signing Dennis Morrell slotted home on about 25 minutes.  Some slightly sloppy defending allowed the hosts to go ahead and then extend their lead with a further two goals.  Shortly before the break, a Halsetown player had a bit of a meltdown after being penalised and was duly sent off.  Grampound took advantage of the man advantage and began to pressure the home goal. A couple of efforts were cleared off the line before Mike Cruse reduced the arrears to 2-3 with a rasping drive from 25 yards into the top corner.

After the break, Grampound pushed for the equaliser, mostly dominating the play, and had several more efforts blocked on the line and hit the bar twice before Ryan Maker's long shot curled over the home keeper and into the net to bring them level at 3-3.  Grampound now looked favourites to take all the points but with time running out pushed on for the winner a little too much and the home striker showed his pace to score a home fourth goal.  With time running out and now seeking another equaliser, Grampound again allowed the quick Halsetown striker to run at a lone defender on a couple of occasions and he duly rubbed it in.  Grampound were unlucky to come away with nothing in this game but a more circumspect approach might have brought a better result.
