Kernow Wanderers 2-1 Veterans

16th May 2021

Cornwall Veterans League

A battling performance from 10-man Grampound could not produce the desired result.  The odds were against them when there were 3 no-shows at kick off time and the 10 men were reduced to 9 after 15 minutes when player-manager Mike Bawden suffered a hamstring strain. He bravely carried on for the full 90 minutes but was essentially immobile.  Grampound'd 10 and then 9 had looked to be comfortable and with more precise final passes might have gone ahead. It was the home side who took the lead in the second half when a shot cum cross floted into the far corner of Grampound's net. Things got worse a few minutes later when Glyn Ford was very harshly penalised for handball in his penalty area and was shown a yellow card for his trouble.  Kernow went 2 goals up from the kick and then Grampound when down to 8 fit players as Mike Cruse had to leave the pitch with another hamstring problem.  The Grampound 8 now had to take some risks and battled well, causing some concern and a few free kicks around the home penalty box.  The last of these was rifled into the top corner of the hosts' goal from 25 yards by Jules Woodman to reduce the arrears  but time ran out with Kernow hanging on to their lead.
