North Petherwin Res. 3-1 Grampound

10th October 2020

Duchy League Division 2

A very depleted Grampound team had to weather a storm in the opening 20 minutes as the home side took full advantage of the gale and rain at their backs.  The team defended well to keep it scoreless and on a rare foray forwards were awarded a penalty for handball. James Fryer struck the ball well but it came back off the post.  With seconds to go in the half North Petherwin took the lead with a simple header from close in at a corner by an inexplicably unmarked and unchallenged striker.

After the break Grampound were playing with the elements in its favour and looked much more dangerous at last.  At a corner, Jules Woodman was clearly held by a defender and the referee had no hesitation in awarding Grampound a second penalty of the game,  Martin Lloyd scoring comfortably from the spot.  The home side went ahead again with a completely bizarre goal.  The ball ran out of play and the referee signalled for a throw to the home team.  Both teams stopped playing, only for the referee to ignore his earlier signal and allowed a kick into the Grampound penalty area to be sidefooted home.  Grampound now had to push on and began to take a few chances.  A couple of minutes from the end a home player seemed to foul a Grampound defender but was allowed to continue and he put a low cross into the Grampound 6 yard box . A  good tackle from Aidan Richards stopped the initial danger but the ball squirted away from the two players to another home striker and his mishit shot from 5 yards managed to find the corner.
