Grampound First Team 2018-9
Match Report

Lanivet 5-2 Grampound

Saturday 8th September 2018
Duchy League Division 2

Grampound began the game impressively, creating some chances in the opening period but the best of which were missed - one blazed over and one put too near the home keeper. It was a shock when Lanivet took the lead on 15 minutes with, to be fair, an excellent goal although Grampound's marking could be judged to be a little slack. Two minutes later another blow was delivered when a ball driven into the penalty area hit Greg Dunn's chest and ricocheted onto his arm. The referee awarded a very harsh penalty which was duly despatched. That seemed to knock the wind out of Grampound and Lanivet were now on top. A bizarre incident occurred when the referee blew his whistle and everyone stopped. He shouted play on and the ball ended up at Grampound's end and eventually in the net. The whistle certainly affected the play, although the referee claimed he did not blow it. About 30 players and subs, together with a decent-sized crowd all definitely heard it! Shortly before half time, Grampound almost forced a goal but the well-hit shot came back off the post and bounced to safety. In their next attack, Grampound failed to clear a ball and a low shot gave the home club a comfortable 4-0 half-time lead. Grampound pushed on after the break and soon pulled a goal back when Alex Moorcroft's low diagonal ball into the penalty area was collected by Chris Wells and smashed low into the net. Lanivet scored a fifth when a long hopeful punt caught out BJ and floated over him into the net. Dylan Fox's aggressive running paid dividends when he drove into the penalty box with the ball after beating a couple of defenders and was hauled down. He got up to score a tidy penalty to reduce the arrears. Jules Woodman had a decent chance at the far post from a free kick but his sidefoot shot went inches past the post. Lanivet will be a strong team in this division but if the sloppy aspects to Grampound's game can be reduced, the team will do OK.
