Grampound Veterans 0-2 Perranporth

(Cornwall Veterans Knockout Cup, Round 1)

Grampound were very poor through most of the first half.  Ball retention was close to zero and this gave the initiative to the visitors who scored a couple of good goals to be two up inside 20 minutes. With Perranporth given the ball and lots of room they found it easy to dominate possession and Grampound's only real chance came late on in the half when some sloppy play at the back by Perranporth gave the ball to Andy Peers and as he was about to pass the ball into the net the referee blew for half time before he could.

Straight after the break, Grampound almost pulled one back from the kick off when John Ward carried the ball to the goal line and pulled the ball back for Rob Sharpe to shoot. The ball hit the inside of the post and rolled along the goal line and out. Grampound looked a different team now and pressed hard to get back into the game. Their best chance came when Sharpe cut inside a defender but was held back and the referee rightly awarded a penalty.  Technically, as the defender did not make a genuine attempt to play the ball this might have warranted a red card but none was shown. Unfortunately for Grampound, Jules Wodman's spot kick hit the post.  Although a disappointing result for Grampound the team was very pleased with its second half performance and will take heart from it.
