Grampound 2-4 Callington Town

(Cornwall Junior Cup Round 2)

A virtually new team played, as might have been expected, like strangers for the opening period and consequently Grampound were 3-0 down inside 20 minutes. A couple of good goals and a penalty saw Grampound looking at another big score against but, instead, the team rolled up its sleeves and battled their way back into the game. Ryan Orchard struck another superb free kick from distance into the top corner and, with Grampound suddenly on top, wriggled through just before the break to reduce the arrears even further.

Grampound were the better team in the second half in terms of chances created with Callington strangely subdued after their spectacular opening. Sam Grose, debutant Talan Annear, Jules Woodman and Ryan Orchard all missed presentable chances but it was not to be but Orchard might have earned a penalty with a series of fouls on him but none awarded until he stepped out of the penalty area. The resulting free kick came to nothing. In the last seconds, the visitors grabbed a goal that secured their place in the next round but it was a very positive and pleasing performance from the home side after the opening disappointments.
