Saturday 25 September 2010 Week St Mary 1-5 Grampound(Duchy League Division 1)) Week St Mary came roaring out, as they always seem to at home, and the Grampound defence had tobe alert to withstand energetic movement from the home team. Once the opening salvos had been fired it became clear that the home team were good at passing around in front of the Grampound defence but lacked a little in penetration. Grampound also began making chances of their own and should already have been ahead when Ryan Orchard nipped in front of a static defence to head the opening goal from a Greg Dunn free kick on the right. Grampound then proceeded to waste numerous chances but also brought the home keeper into action and he was forced into a succession of good saves. Apart from one occasion when Grampound keeper james Brooker was called into action, the visitors did not look in too much trouble at this stage until an unnecessary free kick was conceded and its delivery into the Grampound penalty area was sliced by defender Richie James past his own keeper to put the home side back on terms. Soon after, Brooker in the away goal made a stupendous save to get a terrific drive over the bar and a little after that a home player over-reacted to an innoccuous foul by Weeks. His silly reaction earned him a red card and at that point there were some unpleasant scenes involving the home crowd which continued to and during half-time. The referee was calmness personified and dealt with the escalating situation bravely and resolutely. The home 10 men came out fired up for the second half and for 10 minutes it looked as if their energy was going to make up for the man deficit. Gradually, though, Grampound imposed themselves and once Weeks had run onto a pass from Steve Webb and slotted home there was only going to be one winner. Max Varnell, returning to the Grampound colours this week after a spell away, came on as sub and hit a third from another Webb pass. His speed and movement continued to cause the home defence problems and following one of his forays and a good tackle by Sam Leaney, Steve Webb drilled home. Minutes later he added a fifth when he latched onto a tired backpass and scored his fifth goal in the last two games. |
