Lewdown Rovers 2-1 Grampound Res.

(Duchy League Div 4)
Back to Fixtures

Grampound Reserves were unlucky to come home pointless after a brave display on a difficult frozen surface where the referee could be criticized for allowing the match to begin. The high-flying home team looked very ordinary in the first half but managed to take the lead when Grampound only half-cleared and the ball came to a home forward who put in a good finish across the goalkeeper into the far corner. This was Lewdown's only real shot in the first half and Kev Toms stabbed home from close range following a corner to give Grampound a deserved equaliser on the half-hour.

The third quarter of the game belonged to Grampound and only hasty passing in the last third of the pitch denied the visitors. A stonewall penalty should have been awarded when Steve Webb was twice fouled as he ran at defenders in the home penalty area and after being hacked down fifteen yards out the referee eventually took the play back to the first offence just outside the penalty area. This was a bizarre decision, compounded by the blatant intransigence of the home linesman who saw it all from just a few yards range.

Five minutes from time Lewdown managed to put a player clear of the Grampound defence. He looked several yards offside but there was no flag and he went on to squeeze the ball home for the winning goal, something not really deserved by the home team.
