Grampound Res 4-2 Southgate Seniors

(Duchy League Div 4)
Back to Fixtures

Grampound Reserves came into this game with 5 of the season's regular squad with the first team, but the club have made several new signings in recent weeks, so manager Alastair Woodman was able to name a competitive side. A change of formation to 4-4-2 seemed to give the side a more attacking edge as scoring goals had been a problem in previous weeks.

Southgate took the lead after a long ball down the middle, Alastair Woodman won the first header but didn't get much distance on the header and Southgate were first to the 2nd ball leaving Ryan Julian through on ball. Adam Smith saved his first effort but the player side footed the rebound into an empty net. On 20 minutes Dai Moseley was upended and Jules Woodman moved in to head home Ryan Orchard's free-kick at the far post. On the 30 minute mark Southgate again took the lead after a miss-hit cross hit keeper Smith before falling kindly to Max Deeble who drove the ball home from close range. Grampound had chances to equalise with Jason Retallick's long range effort well saved; and Jamie Orchard sending an effort wide after a typical driving break from Retallick. Five minutes before the break the side equalised when Ryan Orchard made a good run down the right and his cross was met by a typical Dai Moseley header a yard out at the far post; 2-2 at half time.

Grampound improved after the break with Retallick making a number of hard but fair tackles in the middle, with Simon Lucas impressing after coming on as a half-time sub for the injured Jamie Orchard. The goal of the game arrived on 55 minutes after Moseley won the ball in midfield and fed Ryan Orchard who played a delightful reverse pass through-ball into the path of Lee Budge who gave the keeper no chance with a low shot. Southgate had a fair share of the ball and Grampound had to dig deep at times, defending a number of corners and throw-ins deep in their own half. Henry Hughes, who had a cracking game at right-back, marshalled the tricky Southgate left-winger superbly and nullified this threat. Southgate looked most dangerous at set pieces although they did strike the post with a volley from distance and Adam Smith did well to tip over an over-hit throughball that almost lobbed the keeper.

As the game progressed Grampound created some good chances on the break with Orchard shooting wide with only the keeper to beat and Retallick failed to the hit the target after a driving run through the middle. In injury time Dan Smith's cross deceived the Southgate keeper and found the back of the net to make the game safe at 4-2 in what was the last meaningful action, with the referee blowing for full-time seconds later. There were a number of contenders for Man of the Match with Ryan Orchard setting up the first 3 goals; and Jason Retallick making a number of crunching tackles in the middle but Henry Hughes had an outstanding game at right-back and just pipped the others.
