Saturday 5 December Gerrans 1-1 Grampound Res.(Duchy League Div 4) Grampound Reserves put in an excellent performance against runaway league leaders Gerrans, but at no point in the match was it possible to pick out which team had title ambitions and which was striving to stay in the division. Grampound' s passing matched that of the home team throughout and in the first half the home team, playing down the slope on their home pitch and with a gale force wind behind them, failed to conjure a single clear cut chance, although balls in from set pieces caused the visitors lots of problems. With Steve Webb causing trouble with his running with the ball, Grampound nearly took the lead when Budge met a fierce cross from the left by Webb but his effort cleared the bar. The scond half saw a continuation of a similar pattern and Orchard should have given Grampound the lead but his shot was delayed and he was then under pressure from defenders and eventually put his effort from close range wide. Budge also missed an great chance when he mishit an excellent cross from Orchard. As the half proceeded, Gerrans did manage to build up some pressure and a goal eventually came on about 70 minutes. The ball was given away by Grampound's midfield on the halfway line and eventually a cross from the right was headed home. Grampound defenders claimed that the ball had gone well out of play before the cross but the goal stood and it looked as if Grampound would suffer yet another defeat from a single goal, soft as it was. The team, however, battled back and following a corner against, broke very quickly and Orchard slipped the ball to Steve Webb about 15 yards out, but a litlle wide down the left. Webb smashed a vicious drive into the net at the near post before the goalkeeper could move and Grampound had scored a well-deserved equaliser. The last 15 minutes saw an even period, but Grampound were well worth their point and may even have earned all the points in the closing stages. |
