Saturday 19 September Launceston Utd 4-2 Grampound(Duchy League Div 1) Grampound struggled to keep possession through a difficult first half against the table-toppers who, although they passed the ball neatly, were well marshalled by Webb and Moorcroft in the vistors' back four. In a rare attack, Weeks rifled a low shot under the diving home keeper to put Grampound ahead but a few minutes later the hosts were back on terms with a rather soft goal at a corner. The referee made a couple of poor decisions as the half drew to a close. Joe Dunn made a poor challenge, leaving a Launceston player with a serious injury, and was lucky to stay on the field with the referee not even blowing up or having a word. Seconds later John Brooker's clean tackle was bizarrely penalised and then the referee awarded perhaps the softest penalty anyone had ever seen when he penalised Joe Dunn for a most innocuous challenge which even the home team found a bit surprising. The penalty was put away just before half-time and so the referee's incredibly strange decision had undone the careful and hardworking defensive display that had characterised Grampound's performance. Grampound posed more problems in the second period but Launceston scored two good goals to make the result safe before skipper James Webb headed home Maker's good delivery from a free kick to give Grampound at least the best goal and the final positive act of the match. |
