Newquay Minor 4-3 Grampound

(Cornwall Junior Cup Round 1)

Grampound started well, knocking the ball around and opening up the home defence in the opening minutes after neat passing released Weeks down the left. His cross was volleyed home by Ryan Maker, making the starting line-up for the first time since returning to the club. Newquay came back into the game but there was no real threat until James Webb was penalised for shepherding a ball out of play. Even the home side were surprised at being given such a chance and the penalty was hit home for the equaliser. Minutes later a misjudgement by Tony Ford allowed an innocuous ball to slip past him and suddenly the home team were ahead. Jon Ridd picked himself up from a potentially leg-breaking tackle to hit the net from close range at a corner to level things just before half time.

Minutes into the second half another unbelievable decision gave Newquay a second penalty and agin they were ahead. Grampound fought back, becoming somewhat incensed by some reckless tackles, and on the hour Ryan Maker hit a drive from 25 yards into the top corner for another equaliser. The winner came when a long range free kick took a wicked deflection and looped into the Grampound goal. Minutes from the end there was an unpleasant incident when Joe Dunn was clearly kicked from behind and he turned and pushed the player. He was shown a red card but the perpetrator escaped with just a yellow. That summed up an totally inept performance from the referee from start to finish and Grampound were unlucky to lose a game in which Tony Ford didn't have a shot to savein open play and hardly a cross to catch.
