Saturday 1 May Grampound 2-2 Launceston Utd(Duchy League Div 1) Grampound concluded their season with a tough home fixture against promotion-chasing Launceston and for much of the first half played in a lacklustre way that came about after safety was assured by the brilliant midweek performance at Mevagissey. Grampound could have been ahead in the opening minutes when, firstly, Ryan Orchard was upended after making himself space for a shot just 3 yards out and then he headed over from close range. Launceston came back into the game, though, and Grampound found it hard to put much together. The visitors took the lead on 25 minutes when Ford tried to touch a long shot from Dave Andrew over the bar but missed the ball and then shortly after Shane Weeks fouled in the penalty box and Charlie Barnes made no mistake from the spot. Harsh words at half time sparked Grampound into a little more action in the second half and Launceston found themselves having to dig in to protect their lead. On the hour, Steve Webb's flicked header was met by Weeks and he nicked the ball over the advancing keeper, who went down a little too early. Grampound sensed they could get something from the game and poured forward, but it was on a break rather than from constant pressure that the equaliser eventually came. Substitute Lee Budge collected a clearance on the half way line and ran with the ball, outpacing the covering defenders, and eventually slotted the ball home in a small gap at the near post from the edge of the penalty area. Half chancesstill came and went and a draw was probably a fair result. Grampound's run in to the end of the season of Played 11, Won 6, Drawn 3, Lost 2 was promotion rather than relegation form and suggests that, with an addition or two and good availability, next season could be interesting if the team can be held together. |
