Week St Mary 2-1 Grampound

(Duchy League Div 1)
Back to Fixtures

Grampound started the game looking as if they had never played together before and only debutant Benoit Tanguy looked any sort of threat. Week were faster to the loose ball and only some well-organised and dogged defending denied the hosts a clear chance. The best chance fell to Tanguy and he raced clear only for his shot to be deflected wide by the home keeper. With 35 minutes played somegood work down the right allowed Ryan Orchard a sight at goal and he beat the goalkeeper from close range to put Grampound ahead. At last Grampound found some passing form and kept the home side at bay just by keeping the ball.

Two minutes after the restart the home side were level, the ball being flicked past Ford with Grampound appealing for what looked like a clear offside. More solid defending over a long period limited Week's opportunities and at 1-1, Grampound looked happy with the point but good breaks and crosses from Tanguy meant they still carried a threat. With 5 minutes left a good ball up to substitute Mike Sweet saw him control it but he was not likely to outrun the defence. He looked up and drove the ball high past the advanced goalkeeper from about 40 yards into the roof of the net. A fantastic finish to earn Grampound 3 valuable points on an afternoon of hard work and battling.
