Saturday 6 March Altarnun 3-2 Grampound(Duchy League Div 1) Grampound were forced by injury and unavailability to field a very depleted midfield, but opened this match looking like they were the promotion favourites rather than their hosts. Neat passing and sound tactics gave Grampound a definite edge and they took a deserved lead after 15 minutes when Weeks 'cross shot fould the far corner. Just a minute later Moorcroft should have extended the lead when his challenge in the area saw the ball break back to him but his shot hit the post from close range when he will have expected to slot the ball home. Altarnun came back into the game but offered little real threat until a clearance rebounded off a backside perfectly for the ball to be hit well into the top corner for the equaliser. Grampound looked to have weathered the worst when, just before the break, the midfield switched off and a midfield player was able to pick his pass to the Altarnun striker who neatly lobbed over Ford into the net. Grampound did not deserve to be behind and the second half saw them pushing Altarnun back. Mike Saunders missed a reasonable opportunity when put clear by James Webb and then was just unable to get on the end of Weeks' cross after an excellent passing move. With Steve Webb's running causing problems continuously, Grampound always looked dangerous and a deserved equaliser came when a headed clearance looped to the edge of the area. Steve Webb met it on the volley and lashed it low into the corner for a fine goal. Unfortunately, minutes later the Grampound defence lost concentration as one of the back four went down injured and Altarnun finished well for what proved to be the winner. A changed formationin the last few minutes in search of another equaliser nearly paid off but did leave Altarnun looking dangerous for the first time but it was not to be. A Grampound squad disappointednot to have taken at least a point, had, however, put in a very pleasing performance. |
