Saturday 20 February Bodmin Saints 1-2 Grampound(Duchy League Div 1) Grampound welcomed back centre backs Stuart Harris and Steve Moorcroft and, once the opening 10 minutes were over, they settled into a very solid pairing with Stuart Harris, who had not played since the beginning of November, showing why he had been missed and going on to be nominated as man of the match. The opening period saw the home midfield finding lots of space around the Grampound penalty area but once the reorganised team were settled the back four looked very solid. Grampound's midfield also worked out how to deny the opposition space and Grampound looked much the better team once fifteen minutes had passed. Ten minutes before half-time Glyn Ford evaded a couple of tackles to move into the home penalty area and was brought down for an obvious penalty. Shane Weeks stepped up and confidently put away the penalty kick. A couple of minutes later Ryan Maker was subjected to a foul on the half way line but the referee played a good advantage and his diagonal pass released Weeks down the right. Weeks' superb low shot into the far corner put Grampound two up. If the first half saw Grampound outplay their opponents, in the second half they had to out-battle them as Bodmin came back strongly. Grampound's looked pretty comfortable most of this time and it was Grampound who created much the better chances, with Saunders, Ford and Lucas all guilty of missing when scoring looked easier. Grampound should have been four or five up when Bodmin eventually pulled one back ten minutes from time, giving an anxious last period but they held on for their first three point haul of the season. |
