Tuesday 20 April Godolphin Atlantic 1-1 Grampound(Duchy League Div 1) This relegation battle was fought out on a perfect evening on a far from perfect pitch. Grampound had to battle for every ball but took the game to the hosts in the opening minutes. Scott Roseveare made a terrific run down the right and his perfect low cross was met at the near post bu Benoit Tanguy. He controlled the ball, created a little space and smashed it home from about eight yards to put Grampound in the lead after 8 minutes. Godolphin fought back and Grampound had to defend well at the same time as protecting themselves from some reckless challenges. Godolphin cretaed little, though, until 5 minutes from the break they were awarded a free kick wide on the right for a seemingly innocuous challenge. The kick was floted in to the far post, deceiving Grampound's keeper and nestling in the far corner for a soft goal. The second half continued in much the same waywith Godolphin trying to take control and Grampound battling to prevent it. Orchard and Tanguy both had presentable chances for Grampound but the home pressure meant that defending was the order of the day. Tony Ford made a tremendous save low to his left to prevent a close-range header from passing him and at the final whistle Grampound were pleased with the point whereas the home team really needed all three. The quality of defending was reflected in the fact that Godolphin fielded two strikers who regularly play in in South West Peninsula League, yet their only goal was from a goalkeeping error. Well done, Grampound. |
