Grampound 4-2 Tintagel

(East Cornwall Youth League, Under-16s)
Back to Fixtures

Not only was this the last game of the season but also the last time this group of lads would be playing together as a team.  Not a moment for sadness but one of celebration.  The guys have come a long way in two years, and I really do believe that had we been together longer we could have done something special.  To tell you the truth, I think we could have won the league this year.  In all four key games against St Stephen and Roche, we played with 11 men or less, and never with our full strongest team.  If you think I am mad, consider this - two weeks ago, Bodmin (who we drew 2-2 with last week and should have beaten), easily beat St Stephen 2-0 with just 10 men.  The Bodmin manager told me after our game that we were the toughest team he had played against this season!!   The Roche manager scouted at two of our games because he thought we were the best ‘football-playing’ team in the league!

Anyway – it was good to see a big crowd and great weather for the last game, and it turned out to be a really good match despite us not playing as well as we can.  We had a warning early-on that Tintagel had come for some revenge after the thrashing we gave them earlier on in the season.   They won a penalty inside the first 5 minutes but Graham stood tall and saved it.  We slowly began to dominate the game and deservedly took the lead through Lewis after 15 minutes.  But Tintagel came right back at us and equalised to make it 1-1 at half-time.  A bit of hair-drying during the break got the lads playing again and Theo scored a great break-away goal to give us the lead and it looked like the game was over until Tintagel once again equalised to silence the crowd.  However we were not going to be denied this time as normal service was resumed and we were playing our short quick passing game.  A brilliant run and cross from Toby gave Stu-head the chance to head in the lead, and a wonderful free-kick from Lewis (his second in two games) sealed it.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the lads over the last two years.  Particularly the ‘volunteer’ linesmen - no more hiding in your cars waiting until the first Dad makes the mistake of walking towards the pitch!!!  And of course thanks to all the lads.  Without you guys we wouldn’t have had a cracking two years.  Good luck to all of you.
