Sunday 22 February

Roche 8-1 Grampound

(East Cornwall Youth League, Under-16s)
Back to Fixtures

In some ways we got exactly what we deserved.  To play a game against one of the best teams in the league with only 9 players for a third of the match and 10 players for the remainder, is just suicidal.  However, in the end, the score actually flattered Roche because once more we showed our true grit and fighting spirit and gave them a really tough match.    To have both Roche managers come over and congratulate us on the way we played and concede that we were the better team in the first half is high praise indeed!   The real damage was done in the last 20 minutes as the infamous skiing trip took its toll and we came to a grinding halt and Roche repeatedly ran through us to score at will.  Stu scored our only goal from Luke’s pinpoint cross after a brilliant phase of passing from back to front involving 6 players.  It was the first goal that Roche had conceded this season.  Jonny Ridd was man of the match and was immense in the centre of midfield.

I am convinced that if we had had a full team out we would have beaten Roche today and put us back in the hunt to win the league.  Alas this was not to be largely due to the selfish actions of two players – Nick and Tom – who just couldn’t be bothered to turn up.
