Sunday 19 April Lostwithiel 2-3 Grampound(East Cornwall Youth League, Under-16s) Our games against Lostwithiel have always been close and this was no exception. In glorious weather and in front of a big crowd both sets of players served up a classic. 2 nil up with 15 minutes to go; it looked as if we were going to cruise to the finish but that’s not the way we like to do things. We would much rather gift 2 goals and then score a late winner and hang on for the final couple of minutes! Great fun for the neutral spectator, nerve wracking for the management and parents. With Ben back in central defence, we looked a much stronger team, and for the first time this season Lostwithiel’s dangerous frontline were neutralised. This allowed Jonny and Toby to dominate the midfield, and provide good service to Lewis who once again looked dangerous every time he got the ball. However it was a cracking finish from Stu that gave us a much deserved lead at half time. We continued to dominate in the second half and when Jonny slotted a penalty early on it looked as if the game was over. Once again defensive errors cost us and Lostwithiel quickly got back on level terms. But for once we were destined to get what we deserved and Lewis volleyed in a winning goal with 5 minutes left. Still, Graham had to make two top drawer saves in injury time to stop Lostwithiel from sneaking an equaliser. It was good to have 13 players and everyone contributed and played well. In particular, I thought Tom, Albert, Jake, Ben, Lewis, and Stu had great games but it was Jonny who got Man of the Match from the opposing manager for a dominant performance in midfield. |
