St Teath Res. 0-2 Grampound Res.

(Duchy League Division 4)
Back to Fixtures

With a midfield strengthened by the addition of Sean Mee and Stuart Harris, both seeking some fitness, the Reserves looked very comfortable throughout the match. Although the hosts played some neat football they looked a little toothless and were well contained by the Grampound back four - Mike Berry and Aaron Yeo had fine games, Julian Woodman was solid and combatative and Harry Lewis grew as the game progressed. The defensive qualities of James and Harris were needed in the first half playing against the strong wind, but St Teath were restricted to very little and when crosses did come in Nigel Strickland's handling was faultless. The best chance of the half fell to Ryan Orchard but his shot was comfortably saved. Grampound took over in the second half and Mee, after a quiet first period, looked very dangerous. On one of his typical runs into the penalty area it looked as if he had won a clear penalty as he was taken down but the referee bizarrely awarded a corner instead. Not to be denied, a few minutes later he was slipped through with a neat pass from Orchard and made no mistake with a shot into the far corner. Grampound were now in complete control and began to play with real confidence, looking as if they might extend the lead with every attack. When the second goal did come, however, it was a very strange one. A corner from the right was met by a home defender but his clearance went straight up in the air. A St Teath player jumped a little awkwardly for the second ball and only succeeded in heading the ball backwards past his own keeper and into the net. Strickland made a good save to keep the two goal lead and Harris had a goalbound drive diverted round the post when it touched Mee.

This game made it three league wins in a row and was another huge stride in the battle to avoid relegation.
