Biscovey Res. 3-0 Grampound Res.

(Duchy League Div 4)
Back to Fixtures

Grampound started the match with high expectation after some excellent performances and results during pre-season. Biscovey had the first chance of the game when veteran Gary Barnard won a header from a free-kick but James pushed the effort round the post. Grampound’s first chance came after Carkeek was upended on the edge of the box; Orchard came close with the free-kick, smashing the effort against the angle of post and bar with the keeper beaten.

Grampound’s inability to keep possession meant that they had to defend for long periods and it was therefore no surprise when veteran Barnard bundled home for Biscovey on 20 minutes. With 30 minutes gone Biscovey doubled their lead, when James made a superb point blank save but the loose ball cannoned off centre-back Lewis and into the empty net.

Grampound knew they had to improve in the second half if they were to get anything from the game, and enjoyed their best spell just after half time. Right from kick-off Shaun Mee broke free but his finish was agonishingly inches wide of the post. The same player then danced around several Biscovey players only to be upended but referee Trudgian waved play on. The Biscovey keeper made good saves from Carkeek, Varnell and Orchard from range and Biscovey survived a few goalmouthl scrambles with Bawden and Fryer both having efforts cleared off the line. In Biscovey's first meaningful attack of the half Barnard, who was Biscovey’s best player by some distance, scored with a superb header into the top corner from the penalty spot.

Grampound didn’t let their heads drop but their inability to string more than 3 passes in a row ultimately meant that Biscovey looked more dangerous when they attacked and James made a couple of decent saves late on.

The team now needs to improve for the next League game at Mount Charles, in particular on maintaining possession and winning the second ball, the two key reasons why Biscovey were able to come away with the 3 points from this game.
