Grampound 1-1 Bodmin Saints

(Duchy League Division 2)
Back to Fixtures

Bodmin Saints came to the Recreation Ground with a formidable record but it was Grampound who called the tune early on and signs of frustration were only too clear in the visitor's game. They were harried into a series of mistakes at the back and Sean Mee went close on a couple of occasions. Grampound took the lead on 20 minutes with the move of the match. Maker released Greg Dunn down the left and his low cross was met by Glyn Ford at the near post, who steered a low first-time shot inside the post and past the right hand of the diving keeper. It was a deserved lead but Saints came back strongly and put the home side under their real pressure. It took only about 10 minutes for a chance to fall for Ames and Harris was unable to keep out his strong shot. Grampound held out for the remainder of the half but felt they had stretched the league leaders and were in with a chance of an upset.

The second half saw the hosts pressurising players on the ball a little more consistently and forcing them into mistakes while making chances of their own. The game developed into an absorbing end to end battle with Grampound's back four giving the lively visiting forwards little room in which to play, although Grampound survived a penalty appeal when Gritton's foul was adjudged to be just outside the penalty area. Saintsdefence and keeper were put under pressure from crosses and the game looked as if it could go either way. Mee's low header was pushed round the post and his smart turn and shot brought another good save low to the keeper's right. Grampound might have stolen all the points in the last few minutes but two goal-line blocks denied them. At the other end Harris did well to tip over a powerful close range header and Grampound survived a couple of corners to earn a well-deserved point.

This was an exciting, full-blooded game of football where Grampound showed they are capable of mounting a promotion challenge. All players played their part in a game that could have gone either way and in the end a draw was a fair result.
