Week St Mary came to the Recreation Ground with a perfect league record but looked anything but contenders as Grampound opened them at will during a one-sided first half. All the chances created, though, were spurned and although their keeper Stuart Harris was called on once to make a good block, Grampound were stunned to finish the half still level. On another day, the result could have been decided by then but Grampound had to do it all again in the second half.
A great delivery from a free kick wide on the right was met by Dai Moseley for yet another of his set-piece headed goals and, having broken the deadlock, Grampound looked as if they would wrap up the game with every attack. The second goal came, however, at the other end when mis-communication in the Grampound defence allowed an easy chance and suddenly Week St Mary were back on terms after offering little real threat throughout. At the visitors' end, Grampound pressed forward and 12 minutes from time some neat passing released Shane Weeks and this time he made no mistake, hitting the ball cleanly past the approaching goalkeper and high into the net to give Grampound the lead for the second time. The poor communication bug, though, struck again in Grampound's penalty area and Week St Mary equalised in another brief bout of Grampound sloppiness. The defence had performed exceptionally well in open play and from set pieces and had allowed the visitors nothing and therefore the two defensive lapses were very surprising and frustrating to Grampound's manager Tony Ford. In the final minute Weeks created an excellent chance for himself and to put Grampound into the next round when he rounded two defenders but shot weakly at the goalkeeper.
With the score at two each at full time, Grampound came out in extra time determined to win a game that should have been dead and buried long before the additional period and made a couple of opportunities, but had to wait until just three minutes from the end when the tireless Glyn Ford worked himself to the goal-line down the right for the umpteenth time and crossed low. Weeks met the ball at the near post but his shot rebounded from the bar and substitute Andy James, who for most of this season has kept goal for the reserves, was on hand to finish from just a yard or two out.
This was a well-deserved Grampound win but Week St Mary, supposed to be a good bet for promotion from Duchy 2, were a little disappointing and were outplayed in virtually all areas. Manager Tony Ford will want Grampound to push on from their last two good results and make a real challenge for Duchy Division Two honours.
