Week St Mary 4-2 Grampound

(Duchy League Division 2)
Back to Fixtures

An inept performance in the first half by Grampound was harshly punished by three very soft goals - a deflected free kick, a mishit pass to offer an open goal and a bizarre own goal when a clearance rebounded off a Grampound defender and over the line. Grampound did not deserve to be down by three goals at the break but the quality of performance prompted some tough words by manager Tony Ford during the break. Grampound were transformed in the second half with Glyn Ford being given the opportunity to get at the home defence with his jinking runs whereas in the first half he was rarely given the ball. Maker and Rosevear began to tackle and prompt from midfield and Webb and Leaney at the back were winning tackles and headers. Ford rearranged the team to 3-4-3 with half an hour left and it had an immediate effect as brother Glyn caused havoc down the left and sqared for Shane Weeks to drill the ball home. Five minutes later the home team looked worried as Weeks hit a post and Glyn Ford smacked home the rebound. Grampound then began to throw men forward even more in search of the equaliser. Sean Mee's long throws added weight to Grampound's attacks and several near things happened in the Week St Mary penalty box. With seconds remaining and the home team hanging on, Weeks St Mary broke away against a very stretched Grampound team and scored a decent goal to put the result beyond doubt.
