St Breward 3-5 Grampound

(Duchy League Div 2)
Back to Fixtures

A depleted Grampound got off to the worst possible start when indecision at a corner after just 5 minutes allowed Lowen an easy chance from 5 yards and he made no mistake. Fortunately, Grampound were back on terms soon after when Jon Ridd controlled the ball 30 yards out and hit a magnificent unstoppable drive into the top corner for his first goal in men's football. Such a strike would have been deserving to win any game, but Grampound still had much to do and it was neat passing involving Grampound's midfield, ending with a neat throughball to Sean Mee who slid the ball neatly past the advancing home keeper. Grampound then had a host of other chances to put the game out of sight but contrived to miss them all until they were awarded a penalty after Ford was fouled from behind and Shane Weeks confidently put the spot-kick into the corner to give the visitors a two goal half-time lead.

The ten minutes after half time ended up being exactly what Grampound did not want. Jarram reduced the arrears within 3 minutes after a soft cross was allowed and then Kay was given the freedom of the field to score St Breward's equalising third when he should have been closed down. With 38 minutes to go, St Breward were back on terms and it looked as if Grampound would have a very tough end to the game. It did not actually happen like that, however, as Grampound worked themselves back into the game and gave the hosts very few furthre opportunities. On the hour, Al Woodman was adjudged to have been pushed as he jumped for a corner and Shane Weeks stepped up to hit home his second penalty of the match. Ten minutes later Dean Dunn launched a high ball into the home penalty area and the ball ended up deceiving the keeper and hitting the net to restore Grampound's two goal lead. More chances were squandered by Grampound in the final period but they were pleased at the end to have won all the points, even though they knew they should have won by a hatful.
