Grampound 1-2 Polperro

(Duchy League Div 2)
Back to Fixtures

Grampound returned to action after a lay-off due to postponements longer than the close season and with a new captain in James Webb. Grampound opened well with Scott Roseveare's promptings giving them a distinct edge. However, few good openings came and as the first half went on Polperro became more prominent. Seconds before the break Weeks committed an unnecessary foul near half way, earning himself a yellow card in the process, and the resulting free kick was lofted towards the home goal. Under no pressure, Harris allowd the ball to pas him and a Polperro forward was on hand to poke the ball home.

The second half saw little in the way of excitement. Grampound looked to be under little pressure apart from their own mistakes and at the other end Polperro also looked comfortable. A couple of very good chances did fall to Grampound's Mee but he showed a little rustiness in managing to miss the target on both occasions. Grampound's equaliser came from nothing when a square bouncing ball was volleyed home past the diving keeper's right hand from 20 yards, a rare light on a dull afternoon. It seemed like Grampound may go on to claim all the points but their initial threat petered out and it was Polperro who grabbed the win when a series of errors allowed a cross to reach a Polperro striker who had not been tracked back with as he pulled out to the far post. His header back across the goalkeeper and into the corner put the away team into the lead with 10 minutes left and they had little trouble holding onto the lead.
