Polperro 1-0 Grampound

(Duchy League Div 2)
Back to Fixtures

The points were awarded to Grampound as Polperro fielded an ineligible player.

Grampound's poor away form continued with an abject performance on a difficult pitch and very committed opponents. After weathering an opening storm it looked like Grampound had started to control the game, with a good chance falling to Stuart Harris after neat interplay between Rosevear and Weeks, and his shot beat the keeper only to strike a post. Minutes later Harris moved on to an excellent through ball by Jon Ridd and he flicked the ball past the advancing keeper, but there was not enough pace on the ball to beat a retreating defender who got back to clear off his line. That was about as good as it got, however, and Polperro looked much the more dangerous, overrunning Grampound's midfield at times, and making a number of excellent chances. They scored the only goal of the game when George Saada ran through virtually unopposed and hit a good shot past Hicks. Positives from the game were few, but the performances of Grampound's man-of-the-match Jon Ridd, who always tried to get passing movements going, and Sean Hicks making a very solid debut in goal, can be counted as successes. It was also good to see veteran and club vice-president Chris Paynter coming out of retirement to help the manager out and come on for his first first team game for 5 years. There were far too many negatives - Grampound's inability to counter, let alone dominate, a very moderate Polperro midfield and James Webb's dislocated shoulder adding to Tony Ford's very long injury list, but most of all too many good, established players failing to deliver.
