Wednesday 8 April Probus 4-1 Grampound(Duchy League Div 2) Grampound began very sluggishly and even when they did manage to get possession found the rough grass and rutted surface difficult to play on. Probus seemed to have no such problems though and the pace of their strikers gave Grampound some concerns. Probus took an early lead when a soft header at a corner was touched back to a Probus player rather than booted clear by Glyn Leaney. Grampound slowly got back into the game and the Grampound central defenders sorted out their problems. A free kick wide out on the left was crossed beautifully with pace into just the right area by Greg Dunn and Stuart Harris met the ball to score with a perfect header from 10 yards. Now back in the game, Grampound looked just on top and begun to cause the probus defence some problems with the pace of Weeks and the movement of Ford. Hicks in the Grampound goal was unnecessarily clattered by Pearce and then just before half time Grampound threw away their opportunity for points. Matt Fletcher, having a good game, inexplicably handled in his own penalty area under very little pressure and Trebilcock stepped up to convert the spot kick. The second half was a poor spectacle with neither side able to do much given the intensity of a local derby and a very difficult surface. Ford had a good opportunity but Jason Peters, reinstated from Truro City, made a smart save to deny him. Hicks made a couple of good blocks to deny Probusat the other end. Grampound again failed to challenge at a corner and a free header was duly put away to make the score 3-1. With the light virtually gone, the final goal was hit in from a second ball at yet another corner and it found the back of the net with everyone apart from the goal scorer trying to see where the ball was. The referee blew for time after just over 40 second half minutes saying that he blew early because of the fading light. |
