Saturday 4 April Grampound 1-0 Week St Mary(Duchy League Div 2) From the opening minutes it was clear that Grampound were in no mood to surrender easy points and scored the only goal of the game on seven minutes with the best move of the match. Glyn Ford collected a pass on halfway, turned to run at the visiting defence but picked out the run of Shane Weeks coming in from the right. Weeks 'pace carried him beyond the last defender and he then rounded the goalkeeper and slotted neatly home to give Grampound the lead. Grampound had to spend much of the half defending and Week shot weakly on a couple of occasions when well-positioned. A couple of long free kicks into the Grampound penalty area caused some problems but by and large the Grampound defence held firm although everyone had to work very hard. A superb run and cross from Joe Dunn on on the left gave Stuart Harris a good chance to extend Grampound's lead but the goalkeeper managed to paw the ball away. Soon after Harris had an even better chance but his lob cleared the cross bar when he was put clear. The second half had a similar pattern to the first. Week St Mary's neat passing foundered on Grampound's very solid and resolute defence and it was Grampound who looked the more likely as the visitors pushed on. Glyn Ford began to find more space and his run and cut-back with just 5 minutes left gave Scott Roseveare a good chance 8 yards out but he delayed his shot and allowed the goalkeeper to block his shot. More opportunities for Grampound came and went and the 1-0 scoreline flattered the visitors slightly at the final whistle, given the chances squandered in the last minutes. This was a good win and a clean sheet for Grampound against opposition who have a fine record this season. The promotion race becomes even more interesting! |
